Chief Jamie Graham distinguished himself as the leader of one of Canada's largest police forces and a visionary in his approach to policing and law enforcement.
Sworn in as the 29th Chief Constable of the Vancouver Police Department in August 2002, Graham commanded 1,200 sworn police officers, 300 civilian support staff and countless volunteers. Prior to the VPD, he served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for more than 30 years in a variety of posts including command, investigative and executive positions in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Graham is recognized for being a progressive leader. He took significant steps to assist police officers in dealing with the mentally ill and in addressing domestic violence. He was an outspoken advocate for respecting religious freedoms, particularly as a supporter of the right for Sikh RCMP officers to wear turbans and also guided the VPD during the controversial establishment of North America’s first supervised injection site.
