Andrew Laurie Stangel
Dr. Stangel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA and completed his graduate study in History and Civilization at the Universities of Wisconsin and California. A recipient of numerous academic honors and distinguished teaching awards, he has lectured at colleges and universities, and at museums and galleries, in the United States and Europe. Dr. Stangel also created and directed the Art History Tours program for the United States Armed Forces in Europe.
While living abroad, Dr. Stangel photographed the collections of every major art museum and gallery in Europe, public and private, as well as at historical sites and archaeological zones throughout Europe and the Near East. He has also photographed the great collections on exhibition in the United States, and has a comprehensive resource collection of more than 100,000 art-historical slides which he uses to illustrate his lectures. “If it happened, or was created, sometime between Adam and Neil Armstrong,” Stangel remarks, “I want to be able to illustrate it!”

Treasures of Europe: An Armchair Travelogue: In this lecture, Dr. Stangel will present a personally narrated guided tour through one or more of the great cities, regions, or countries of Europe.
Great Art Museums of Europe and the United States: In this lecture, Dr. Stangel will present a narrated guided tour through one or more of the world’s greatest collections of art, such as The Louvre in Paris, The Vatican Museums in Rome, The National Galley and The British Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Possessing the Past: The proprietorship of cultural patrimonies -- Who owns what? and how? and why? of art treasures, archeological materials, and historical relics -- is the hottest topic of discussion among museum professionals as well as in teh boardrooms of trustees charged with the responsibilities of conservatorship. It has become an aspect of cultural diplomacy at the hightest level, indeed it is an aspect of international relations. And it is a matter of great concern for the survival of museums as we have come to know them and to benefit from them.
Looking at Pictures: How to Read the Old Masters! An illustrated survey of major aspects of symbolism in teh art of the western world, this special lecture will reintroduce the rich visual vocabulary of our ancestors who lived at a time when our world was half a thousand years younger.
Facing History: That history is comprised of the biographies of its most powerful personalities, its "heroes", is a premise known already in ancient times! From the ages of Pericles, Alexander, and Julius Caeser to those of Napoleon, Washington, and Churchill, artists have left their descriptions, in paint, stone, and bronze, of the most famous individuals of their times. This special lecture, illustrated with art-historical slides photographed in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States, will include a close look at some of history's most famous leaders, from antiquity to modern times, as seen through the works of some of the world's greatest artists.
