Tony Roberts
Born into show a show business family, Roberts was rubbing elbows with the legends of stage and screen from his earliest years. While hanging around the CBS studios where his father worked as an announcer, Roberts learned about life under the spotlight, and he instantly liked what he saw.
When Tony Roberts decided to pursue a career as an actor, he asked the legendary Lee Strasberg for advice. He told him “Go to Northwestern University and study with theater professor Alvina Krausse.”
Now, 35 years later, he credits this woman with giving him the vision for his work. Ms. Krause believed that the arts, and theater specifically, has a transformative power because it lifts people out of their ordinary lives.
Roberts’ speech, titled “An Actor’s Journey,” is a celebration of his life in the theater and of the influence individuals can have on us all.
Tony Roberts began his stellar career in Something About a Soldier, the first of eighteen Broadway appearances. He has also appeared in Wendy Wasserstein’s The Sisters Rosensweig, Gower Champion’s Sugar, Saul Bellow’s The Last Analysis, George Abbott’s How Now Dow Jones, Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park, They’re Playing Our Song, Promises Promises, Woody Allen’s Don’t Drink the Water and Play It Again Sam, for which he received a Tony nomination.
His film credits include Sidney Lumet’s classic, Serpico, and many Wood Allen movies: Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, and Stardust Memories.
Roberts has read over two dozen books on audio cassettes including the recently released Star Wars Trilogy, and his voice can be heard on commercials for the U.S. Army, Dupont Stainmaster Carpet, and Primestar.
Roberts has made guest appearances on several television shows, and starred as Joe Rosetti in the NBC series Rosetti and Ryan. He has acted in numerous Shakespearean productions for stage, including The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet.
