The Naked Truth: Advertising's Image of Women
Jean Kilbourne writes and lectures on alcohol and cigarette advertising, the image of women in advertising and other topics.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Wellesley College and her Doctorate in Education from Boston University. Following her graduation from Wellesley, she spent three years in Europe, working for the British Broadcasting Corporation in London and for a French company in Paris.

Upon returning to the United States, she spent several years as a teacher of English, women's studies and media studies on the high school, college and adult education levels. As a result of her teaching, her experience in the media, and her involvement in the women's movement, she developed The Naked Truth: Advertising's Image of Women, the slide presentation that she now presents internationally.

Dr. Kilbourne has also done extensive research on alcoholism, alcohol-related problems and policies, nicotine addiction, and alcohol and cigarette advertising. She is particularly interested in the effect of addictions on women, minorities and young people. Her focus is on prevention education and public policy.

She has created several slide presentations including: Under the Influence: The Pushing of Alcohol via Advertising, You've Come A Long Way Baby: Women and Smoking, Marketing Misery: Selling Addictions to Women, Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction, Pack of Lies: The Advertising of Tobacco and Calling the Shots: The Advertising of Alcohol.

She has written on all of these topics and has been interviewed by many magazines and newspapers including Time, Newsweek, Business Week, Family Circle, The Christian Science Monitor, The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail and The New York Times.

A frequent guest on radio and television programs, including “The Today Show,” “20/20,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she has also been consulted by CNN, ABC and CBS News, and “Nightline.”

Dr. Kilbourne has been appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to the National Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse.
