Author of Fixing Canadian Democracy and 30 Million Musketeers: A Canada for All Canadians, Gibson is a Senior Fellow in Canadian Studies at the Fraser Institute. Gibson is also a regular contributor to the National Post where he provides political commentary on current issues.

Gibson has been active in both the federal and provincial political scene. He served as Assistant to the Minister of Northern Affairs, was Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and served as both MLA and Leader of the BC Liberal Party. He was also hired to design the Citizen's Assembly on Electoral Reform, where the BC government adopted his report. Subsequently, the Assembly was created and will likely change election law in British Columbia.
