Recruited from the sandlots in St. Louis, Joe Garagiola began his pro baseball career at age 16. He participated in one World Series while playing with the Cardinals, and in 1951 was traded to the Pirates. In '54, he retired from the game as a player and concentrated on a broadcasting career. It was a decision that proved fruitful as Garagiola has received numerous awards for his work. His achievements include a Peabody Award in '73, the Ford C. Frick Award in '91, and induction into the broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. His book, Baseball Is a Funny Game, remains one of baseball's bestselling books.
