A native of Gary, Indiana, Darren earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Milliken University in Decatur, Illinois and a Master's degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University Northwest. His tenure as Executive Director of the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males included working with state and local elected officials to create city and county commissions in the cities of Gary, Evansville, South Bend, Muncie, Anderson, Michigan City, Fort Wayne and Lake County, Indiana . Washington 's many awards include the 2003 "Citizen of the Year from the Gary Neighborhood Services Center, and receiving keys to cities of Evansville, and Muncie, Indiana. He is President of the Board for the Lake County Health Coalition, Co-Chairman of the Northwest Indiana Race Relations Council, Board Member of the Gary Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Indiana Quality of Life Council and Lake Area United Way. Darren also serves as a Board member to the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, and is a certified HIV/AIDS Counselor by the Indiana State Department of Health. Washington is a much sought after public speaker, talking on the topics of character building, sexual abstinence education, anti drug, alcohol, tobacco, and the overall importance of building strong families and communities through self-lf-improvement. He is also President and CEO of Abstinence for Singles, which is used to strengthen relationships between males and females.
