J. L. King is a best-selling author and publisher whose passion is to turn writers into best selling authors. He specializes in the analysis of the behavior and lifestyles of African American men who have sex with men, but do not consider themselves gay, bisexual or homosexual 'men on the 'Down Low'-. Drawn from thousands of interviews, statistics, and his first-hand knowledge of the DL behavior, his book delivers the first frank and thorough investigation of the life on the DL. His expertise has been cited in over 100 national publications including Jet, Ebony, People, the New York Times , The Chicago Sun Times and Essence Magazine. He also has been featured more than one hundred web sites. His television guest appearances has included the Oprah Winfrey Show , PBS , BET , CNN , The Discovery Network , and over 80 local news shows.
He has become a nationally recognized 'face'- of African American men who, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), are the number one reason that African American women represent 72% of new HIV cases. King's workshops and presentations are the most controversial and widely discussed sessions at conferences throughout the nation.
King has consulted with several national health and education organizations, as well as universities. He has interviewed over 2500 African American men who are active members of the DL community.
He recently received the 2004 Breakout Male Author of the Year award from The African American Literary Awards Show.
He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia and is the proud father of three adult college educated children.
He currently has 6 books published. When he is not working or writing he works as President and CEO of The Lillie Mae King foundation. A family foundation he founded to provide financial support for Black families who have been impacted by HIV/AIDS.
