Spencer Haywood became known for his exploits on the basketball court. However, looking back at the career of Spencer Haywood an argument can be made that his greatest triumph was not on the basketball court but in the court of law, when he single-handedly took on the draft policies of the National Basketball Association and won his case in the U.S. Supreme Court. Spencer Haywood's case paved the way for Maurice Clarett's recent NFL ruling. The league had a rule that no player could be drafted until they were out of high school for 4 years. The league sued Haywood after being drafted by the Seattle Supersonics within this 4-year period. In 1970 the case went to the Supreme Court where the old rule was struck down as a restraint of trade based on the Sherman Antitrust Act. Spencer Haywood's case made history and opened doors for players entering the NBA like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Shaq and many more. Spencer started his basketball career in 1968 when he led the U.S. Olympic Basketball team to a gold medal in Mexico City . He is the youngest basketball Olympian to ever play. He then went on to be a NBA superstar. He holds Olympic and NBA records that still stand today. However in 1979, after a lifetime of battling society's various systems and all the corrupting influence of hoop fame and fortune, Haywood became a victim of drug abuse. He entered a recovery program and now speaks to audiences everywhere on drug prevention and his 19 years of drug-free sobriety.
