Toney Welborn

MD, MPH, MS

TX, US

Physician, healthcare leader, systems thinker & storyteller who turns COMPLEXITY into CLARITY. Audiences learn to QUESTION assumptions, identify BARRIERS and find practical ways FORWARD.

A physician, healthcare leader, systems thinker, and storyteller, Dr. Toney Welborn brings an unusual perspective to organizational complexity and human resilience: she has spent her career seeking clarity in complex systems—and a lifetime learning what it means to move forward anyway.

A childhood cancer survivor and above-knee amputee, Toney brings experience spanning clinical medicine, public health, Medicaid, and executive healthcare leadership. Her professional and lived experiences give her an uncommon vantage point from which to explore both why systems get stuck and how people keep moving.

Toney speaks about:

Clarity as an Intervention — looking beyond the obvious, questioning assumptions, following variation, and finding the story behind the data

Forward Anyway — a realistic approach to resilience grounded in surviving, succeeding, struggling, and accepting support

Organizational Systems Thinking 101 — understanding how data, processes, incentives, workarounds, and human behavior interact to produce results no one intended

Toney doesn't present resilience as relentless positivity or simply “overcoming” adversity. She invites audiences to recognize the strength they have already demonstrated while being honest about reality, barriers, boundaries, and the role of support.

That same commitment to reality shapes her work with organizations. For Toney, clarity is an intervention. She challenges audiences to look beyond the first explanation and identify the problem that actually needs solving—without pretending complex problems have simple answers.

Through stories and practical frameworks, Toney makes complexity understandable and memorable. Whether the challenge is personal or organizational, audiences leave asking better questions, seeing barriers more clearly, recognizing strengths and possibilities, and finding practical ways forward.
