Raised in the inner-city of Detroit by his mother and grandmother and a product of the Detroit Public Schools system, through dedication, determination, hard-work, teamwork and ‘hard-knock’ learning, Dr. Charleston excelled scholastically, academically, and athletically - persevering to become the first African American neurology faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan (UM) then lead other institutions’ divisions. Dr. Charleston, a board-certified neurologist and headache specialist with decades of serving and providing world-class clinical care, has made significant contributions to the field. With more than 175 presentations, 55 peer-reviewed publications, 55 abstracts, 50 patient and/or provider educational materials, textbook chapters, and through research, his excellence has been recognized nationally.

Demonstrated Leadership:

From a Big Ten neurological division to region-based community organizations, Dr. Charleston has demonstrated leadership prowess. Always learning, he is a graduate of the American Headache Society’s Emerging Leader program, the American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) diversity Leadership Program, and AAN’s Palatucci Advocacy and Leadership Forum (and former advisor). He represented the UM’s Department of Neurology participating in an American Association of Medical Colleges faculty leadership program. Dr. Charleston has non-profit and committee Board leadership experiences. He is a Co-developer of American Headache Society’s (AHS) Leadership Academy. Dr. Charleston cofounded Charleston International with the supporting system of Leadership Team Development and its leadership curriculum having a long-time partnership with John C. Maxwell, the #1 Leadership expert in the world. He has studied under the tutelage of this system for over a decade. Currently, Dr. Charleston is considered for the nomination slate of Board of Directors of the National Speakers Association of Michigan.

Dr. Charleston is the recipient of lectureship awards from the American Neurological Association and the American Headache Society, several “Making A Difference” awards from the University of Michigan Health System Employee Recognition Program, and a “Top Neurologist” nomination.
