At 24 years old, I co-founded a brand of fun, practical, and unique children’s products called Kidorable. If you had asked me then, or in the 2+ decades I served as President, ‘Are you passionate about Kidorable?’, I would have said unequivocally yes.
I loved my job. I loved our people. EO taught me everything I know about being a confident leader and entrepreneur. And we thrived as a business, being sold in 5,000 stores in 20 countries. We were even lucky enough to appear in People Magazine and on the Today Show. I was conventionally successful.
But if you had asked me, ‘Does selling fun, practical, unique children’s accessories make your heart sing?,’ I would have had a different answer.
I always struggled to pinpoint just what was missing. Until a crisp January day in 2020, as I walked a familiar route to Lake Michigan from my home in Evanston, IL.
A moment of remarkable clarity took hold of me. I felt the ground physically shift beneath me. My true personal Why, my reason for getting out of bed, wasn’t fully aligned with What I was spending my time doing. I knew I had to make a change. That night my wife and I developed a plan for her to take over as president of the company, and for me to transition to being a full-time coach.
The thread that untangled all the others was an aspect of my daily work at Kidorable that I did love. A love that’s not shared by most people in business, is admittedly unusual, but was both the signal and the spark that sent me down the proper path.
