Luke Mickelson
Luke’s story inspires action, showing how building a bed sparked a movement. Audiences leave empowered to transform, grow and turn small acts into big impact. No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.
Luke Mickelson is a man on a mission—a mission born from humble beginnings, a heart for service, and a belief that no child should sleep on the floor. As the founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), Luke has turned a simple act of compassion into a global movement that has transformed lives, inspired communities, and mobilized thousands of volunteers across the world.
Luke grew up in the rural town of Kimberly, Idaho, a tight-knit farming community where neighbors knew each other by name and hard work was part of daily life. Raised by a single mother alongside four siblings, he learned early the importance of responsibility, grit, and service. His mother worked as a secretary at the local school, which meant Luke was never far from accountability—or inspiration. Though resources were limited, love and purpose filled their home.
Luke's childhood was rich with the kind of experiences that form character. He played sports throughout his youth—not just for fun, but because in a small town, everyone played. Athletics gave him a space to compete, to grow, and to learn teamwork and leadership. Without a father figure in the home, Luke looked to his coaches for guidance, and they delivered—instilling in him the values of discipline, humility, and what it meant to truly support those around you.
As an adult, Luke carved out a successful career in the water treatment industry, where he worked for nearly two decades. He climbed the ladder from an entry-level sales role to Vice President of Sales and Marketing, excelling in leadership and business development. Yet despite his professional accomplishments, Luke felt an emptiness he couldn’t shake. He had the career, the house, the title—but deep down, he was searching for something more meaningful.
He found moments of purpose through volunteer work, youth mentoring, and serving his church, but something was still missing. It wasn’t until an unexpected moment of frustration that everything changed.
In 2012, during a church meeting, someone mentioned a local family whose children were sleeping on the floor. At first, Luke let the comment slide. But later that night, he found himself haunted by the thought:
What if that were my kid?
That single moment of empathy sparked action. Luke went home, took measurements of his daughter’s bunk bed, and sketched a design. He had little woodworking experience, but he had tools, leftover wood, and—most importantly—the resolve to make a difference. That first bed led to another, and another. He involved local youth, built beds as part of service projects, and quickly realized he had stumbled onto something much bigger than a weekend activity.
What started as a personal mission in a garage quickly became a growing volunteer operation. In that same small-town spirit that raised him, Luke rallied his community to help, and Sleep in Heavenly Peace was born.
One seemingly insignificant moment—a decision to get off the couch and build a bed—would become the catalyst for an international nonprofit. SHP’s mission is simple yet profound:
"No kid sleeps on the floor in our town."
But the execution is extraordinary.
SHP chapters build, deliver, and assemble fully furnished beds for children in need—complete with mattresses, pillows, and bedding. With each delivery, a child gains more than a place to sleep—they gain dignity, safety, and the sense that someone cares.
To date, SHP has:
- Grown to over 400 chapters across 46 U.S. states and 4 countries
- Delivered beds to nearly 300,000 children
- Mobilized hundreds of thousands of volunteers
- Built a community united by the simple idea of Humans Helping Humans
Luke developed a comprehensive training system to help new chapters launch and thrive. His hands-on approach and people-first leadership have equipped over 400 chapter presidents to serve their communities with consistency, compassion, and purpose.
Luke’s work didn’t go unnoticed. In 2018, he and SHP were featured on Mike Rowe’s Returning the Favor, a surprise recognition that aired to millions and changed the trajectory of the organization overnight. What Luke thought was a small spotlight became a national movement.
Since then, Luke has been recognized by:
- CNN Heroes (Top 10 Finalist)
- NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt
- The Today Show
- Good Morning America
- People Magazine
- American Ninja Warrior
- And numerous podcasts, local news outlets, and charitable platforms
This exposure brought in a flood of support, allowing SHP to grow exponentially while staying true to its grassroots beginnings.
Through reflection and experience, Luke developed what he now calls the TBF Method—a personal and professional framework that guides everything he does:
- Transform – The Desire to Change
Change starts with a moment of frustration or realization—a spark that says, “There has to be more.” - Build – Taking Action
Dreams mean nothing without effort. It’s the sweat, sawdust, and sacrifice that turn intention into impact. - Flourish – Making a Difference
When transformation meets action, growth becomes inevitable. From one bed to nearly 300,000—this is the power of doing. This method is now a cornerstone of Luke’s keynote presentations and leadership training, offering audiences a powerful, replicable roadmap for personal growth and community impact.
Today, Luke speaks at corporate events, nonprofit summits, faith-based gatherings, and leadership conferences across the country. His story inspires audiences to look inward, take action, and turn their own Tiny Moments into massive impact.
As a podcast host and guest, Luke continues to spread his message of service, humility, and transformation. He believes that everyone has a gift to give and that purpose isn’t found—it’s built, one selfless act at a time.
Luke Mickelson is more than a nonprofit founder—he’s a reminder of what’s possible when ordinary people choose to do something extraordinary. With SHP continuing to expand and impact lives across the globe, Luke remains committed to the mission that started it all:
“No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”
And now, thanks to him and a growing army of volunteers, “our town” includes the world.
