My presentation will help participants understand how to practically design and implement a psychosocial risk (mental health risk) strategy and have mental health conversations with staff.  

Paul Clifford is Director of Paul Clifford Psychology. He is an Organisational Psychologist and has 25 years of experience in corporate and consulting HR and OD roles. His main areas of expertise are within the field of mental health & wellbeing, specifically creating mentally healthy workplaces and helping organisations manage psychosocial risk (mental health risk). His recent assignments include developing a psychosocial risk management approach for the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and Melbourne Polytechnic as well as auditing psychosocial risk practices in a Utilities organisation.


Paul’s earlier work in this area includes consulting to the Coroner’s Court on preventing, mitigating and managing trauma risk and undertaking psychosocial risk assessment for three divisions of Australia Post. Paul also developed a Trauma Risk framework for V/Line.


Paul has worked with organisations across police & emergency services, health, corrections, recruitment, pharmaceuticals, government, not-for-profit and finance to name a few. This includes developing and implementing mental health & wellbeing strategies for SA Police, St John Ambulance WA and Melbourne Health. From 2016 to 2020 Paul was an integral part of the team that designed and implemented WorkSafe’s mental health strategy.


Paul is a skilled facilitator and educator and has the ability to work supportively and constructively with a wide range of groups across multiple industries and professions.  Further rounding our Paul's capability, Paul works in a clinical capacity two days per week, providing 1:1 therapy to a broad range of people with a variety of presentations including anxiety, depression, stress, personality disorders and other mental health conditions.   


Paul helps organisations develop an effective psychosocial (mental health risk) risk strategy and the capability to maintain psychosocial risk as an ongoing concern.  Paul also helps line managers develop their capability to have basic to advanced mental health conversations with their employees, ensuring they get the fundamentals right, so they feel confident and competent to have these productive conversations with their employees.
