Julia Garrison
Want to learn how to become a resilience master? Let Julia be your guide to thrive!
Survivor of a paralyzing stroke/stage 4 cancer against all odds and continues to live triumphantly.
Julia Fox Garrison is a nationally acclaimed keynote speaker, healthcare advocate, and bestselling author of Don’t Leave Me This Way (or when I get back on my feet you’ll be sorry), HarperCollins Publishers. Her story chronicles her struggle to regain control over her life and her body following a massive hemorrhage resulting in a paralyzing stroke. Julia has been hospitalized so many times she says she has earned a PhD (Personal Healthcare Discoveries) -- a blueprint for how not to let the system dictate the direction, pace, and objectives of one’s recovery.
As a long-term patient, Julia has intimate knowledge of the health care system and how it works. Her perspective from inside the bed rails informs her insights on what leads to better-quality health care and improved patient experience. She has honed an uplifting, yet educational message not found in medical textbooks. As Julia says, ‘Focusing on the rules and tasks is black and white, whereas compassion is the space between the lines.
Julia’s PhD continued to educate as it transformed to ‘Personal Happiness Discoveries’ after being diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer. Once again, she found herself in the 2-percentile of survival. She continues to defy all odds and is disease-free after a grueling treatment schedule. She continues to be an enigma perplexing the medical community.
Julia has lectured at conferences throughout the country, where she evangelizes for humaneness in medicine. Speaking from the patient’s perspective, she espouses overcoming challenges by listening to your intuition and putting no barriers to the human spirit.
Julia has received far-reaching media exposure, including:
Good Morning America, People Magazine, NECN, Fox News, ABC News, BBC World News, NPR, Oprah & Friends with Dr. Oz, and various other media channels. Barnes & Noble selected Julia for their Discover Great New Writers series, following the book’s publication. Reader’s Digest included her book in its Condensed Volume for ‘Today’s Best Nonfiction (2007). Her book was recently selected as one of the top 7 must-reads for anyone pursuing nursing. It also won the Applied Association of Therapeutic Humor (AATH) award for furthering their mission—humor in medicine. Julia was featured in a documentary on humor and laughter, produced by Seoul Broadcasting (SBS).
