With several decades of television experience under his belt as both a host (TBS' Dinner and a Movie from 1995-2011) and standup (Comedy Central Presents: Paul Gilmartin, The Late Late Show) Paul turned his attention in 2011 to the topic of mental health and decided the then-emerging platform of podcasting would be a perfect medium for deeply vulnerable conversations about their shared mental/emotional struggles and traumas.
Paul remembered how lonely and hopeless he had felt before he got help for his drinking, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and childhood trauma. He wanted to create what he wished had been there for him; a metaphorical hand to hold in the waiting room of the psychiatrist's office. Someone to bring a well-timed laugh to lighten the load. Someone to just listen and not judge or try to "fix" things. Someone to say "I see you and I feel you. I've been there. You are not alone."
Paul's podcast, the Mental Illness Happy Hour has been downloaded around the glove over 30 million times and lauded by the NY Times, The Atlantic, Slate, Esquire, Women's Health, Oprah Magazine, and the editors at Apple Podcasts, where it has frequently occupied the top spot in the Mental Health category.
Here are some media quotes:
"...a vital, compassionate gem that fills a desperate and under-addressed need in our society." - Esquire
"...a show that makes you feel as if you’re part of a very articulate support group. Gilmartin leads sprawling, intimate conversations with guests...who share raw admissions about their deepest fears, compulsive behaviors and traumatic histories. Though the show can be heavy listening, it’s also laced with irreverent humor and hope." - NY Times
"Normalizes what so many others feel but have been too fearful or ashamed to express...remarkable" - Psychology Today
"Gilmartin makes a conscious effort to explore stories that aren’t black and white" - Slate Magazine
"Praised by listeners all over the world" - Atlantic Monthly
