In 1994, the year when he became Prime Minister, the Irish economy was growing at 5.8 %, the budget deficit was IR 533 million, inflation was 2.4%, and unemployment was 14.7%. In 1997, the year he left office, the economy was growing at 10.7%, the budget deficit had become a surplus of IR386 million, inflation was 1.5%, and unemployment was 10.3%. On the basis of these policies unemployment has since fallen to 3.9%. Mr. Bruton also served as Ireland's Minister of Sports, Minister for Finance, and participated in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He is the past president of the European Union Council where he was instrumental in finalizing the Growth and Stability Pact, which governs the management of the single European Union currency. He is currently the Vice-President of the European People's Party (1999 to date). In this capacity he is currently co-chairing a study of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy of the E.U. in the context of concerns about farm incomes, food safety and environmental protection.
