Bob Smiley

TX, US
Nation's Leading Christian Comedian
I've been doing standup for over 8 years and several of those times have actually been in front of people! I've opened for such groups as Newsboys, Mercy Me, Third Day, Switch Foot, Toby Mac or Audio Adrenaline even though my best friend Peter Furler, lead singer of the Newsboys, will tell you that I don't like to name drop. I CO-headlined a 102 city tour with Riley Armstrong, where for the first time I wasn't the strangest person on stage. I've hosted the first, second and third annual Festival Con Dios tours. Lately I've been seen on the Ultimate Comedy Tour, the TV show Bananas and in Goodwills all over the country!

"Bob is truly one of the coolest guys we've ever toured with. Definitely the funniest. With him you not only get big laughs, but also a big heart."
Mac Powell
lead singer for Third Day

There's a reason we've taken Bob on four tours with us...I just can't think of what that reason is right now... Oh, wait, he is really great at Scaring away stalkers." Peter Furler
lead singer for Newsboys

In 2002, Inpop records released a comedy C.D. of mine called "I've Got A Funny Feeling About This" and in 2004 Full Armor Entertainment put out my comedy DVD called "Firmer Abs in One Hour" which can both be found in Christian bookstores, on my website, or you can buy my dad's copies on Ebay.

I currently write a monthly article for Clubhouse Magazine called "The Adventures of Average Boy!" and I appear sporadically in Christian Musician, Brio, Go!, Brio & Beyond and Faith Talk when they dont have anything better to print.

It's been said that I have a heart for bringing people closer to God by getting them to laugh at everyday stories and not so everyday situations. Of course that quote came from my Mom who also can't understand why the Lakers haven't called me to replace Shaq. The bottom line is, I use standup comedy as a way to draw people in so I can tell them the good news of Jesus Christ!

Where it started: I grew up a Texas kid, which is like any other kid in any other state only with a lot of guns. My town had only 281 people in it and seeing as how we only got two channels and one was channel 3 which always featured a snow storm, my friends and I...well, ok...my friend...well, ok...my dad and I were forced to make up our own fun. That's where I found that I loved comedy and making people laugh.

After High School, I went off to Abilene Christian University in West Texas. (Motto: Have you seen our Tree?). I majored in Elementary Education thinking the classes would be easy. After all, I already knew most of the alphabet. During my Junior year, I entered a few standup competitions offering cash prizes. I found that standup offered a better salary per hour than determining whether or not someone desired fries with their purchase. However, a life spent in bars and standup clubs was not desirable to me. So, upon graduation, I did what most college graduates do, I got a job involving absolutely nothing I studied in college. I did want to be a teacher, but first wanted to see what it was like to have money in the bank. So, I became a professional photographer in Dallas, TX. where I worked for 1 year. Towards the end of that year, I received an unexpected call from an old college friend who now lived in Nashville and was working as a Road Manager for Christian singer Clay Crosse. This old friend had seen me do stand up in college and wanted to know if I was interested in going out on tour with Clay to do standup in-between the acts. Clay's tour opened up the possibility of doing standup without having to go to the normal comedy venues. My comedy was well met with the Christian audiences and I began to get many other offers to do standup.

That was over eight years ago. Since then, I have continued to tour with many Christian bands, perform at several major Christian festivals around the United States as well as doing my own private comedy shows in churches, schools and colleges. In 2001, I even took my show over to the United Kingdom where I found that my brand of comedy was the perfect venue to spreading the Gospel in other countries as well.

That's the long version of how I got here. The short version is: God opened up this big door and pretty much kicked me through it and its been a blast! I've found that people who would not go to hear a preacher will come listen to a comedian. So, I get them to laughing and then they are more apt to listen to the preaching. I get to meet people, share testimonies, and travel God's great masterpiece, not to mention that I get a lot of free hotel shampoo. If I ever start using Shampoo, I'm going to be set!

Anyway, hopefully this has given you a little more information about me. However, the best way to find out more is to just ask. I love people and I've always felt like most of the ministry I do actually happens after my shows when I get to meet everyone. That's the time I love the most, when we can start sharing our testimonies or praying for each other or maybe just laughing some more. Its that personal connection that makes it all worthwhile. So, if you want to know more, come out to a show and introduce yourself. You'll like me, I promise....I've got a funny feeling about it.
