I am a former CEO, with over 45 years in the business world. In 2002, I took a tech company public and rang the bell on the New York Stock Exchange. The company grew to over half a billion dollars in revenue, operating in over 25 countries, with over 2,000 employees. Soon after this success, the company encountered difficulties meeting revenue goals and Wall Street expectations, and I made some critical mistakes. Ethical mistakes.
Acknowledging and holding myself fully and totally accountable for these mistakes, I plead guilty to a white collar crime and was sentenced to 48 months in a Federal Penitentiary.
I spent all of that prison time analyzing my mistakes, lack of accountability, and the flawed decision making process that led to those bad choices. During this time, I was able to interview many fellow inmates about their choices and mistakes, including former prominent business Leaders, Chief Executives, Attorneys, Doctors, Businessmen, Politicians, and hardened criminals as well - and I discovered a common theme:
All of the people I interviewed made decisions while wandering in and out of gray areas, and lacking personal accountability for their choices, until they made an irreversible mistake and landed in jail.
Because of my experiences and research, and as an experienced Leader, I am uniquely qualified to speak on Ethics and Leadership and to offer the perspective of a person who made it big, reached the top in his field, crashed, burned, and was subsequently able to resurrect his career and reputation and get back on the right ethical path.
I have made it my life's mission, my WHY, to share this story and my findings with audiences, with the goal of making people aware of the dangers in making decisions and choices in the absence of a sound ethical perspective.
