Kathy Smith
CA, US
Women's health and fitness icon & author of several books and videos
Kathy Smith has remained in the foreground of the exercise and fitness market since 1980. When she entered this arena, fitness was confined to local gyms and women were not considered viable contenders. But Smith quickly commanded attention by lending her signature to a collection of fitness equipment and a variety of books and videos -- from yoga to menopause, weight lifting and Pilates. She has carved out a niche in the fitness industry and today remains one of its top producers, with over 12 million copies of her workout titles selling in 16 countries. Driven by her desire to develop the perfect fitness and lifestyle regimes possible, Smith constantly explores new avenues to maintain a well-toned, healthy body. She consults world-renowned physicians and nutritionists to stay abreast of the most current health-related findings and breakthroughs. Additionally, she maintains board positions with such institutions as the USC School of Gerontology and the Women's Sports Foundation. As a mother of two daughters, entrepreneur, author, contributing editor of "Self" magazine and host of her own web site, Smith works hard to balance life and career. She has been named the Spokesperson for the National Recreation and Parks Association and the "Healthy America Fitness Leader" by the National Fitness Leaders Association in conjunction with the President's Council on Physical Fitness. She has also been inducted into the Video Hall of Fame, as each of her more than 30 titles has reached gold or platinum status. Although she maintains a demanding schedule, Smith is dedicated to a slate of charities and community services. She serves as celebrity spokesperson for the March of Dimes and is working with the American Heart Association to lead Heart Walks across the country. She has also established the Perrie and Kate Fund, her own grant fund named after her daughters. The fund, which is administered by the Women's Sports Foundation, provides grants, internships, and scholarships to young girls for athletic programs.
