As the owner of Post Pre-press, founder of Independent Ink and co-founder of Indie Experts, I specialise in working with authors, publishers and industry specialists to produce professional books through traditional publishing and self-publishing. In 2020, my three businesses have significantly diversified, as with many businesses, and we have successfully transitioned our dynamic and creative teams to working remotely, with the majority our client conversations now happening virtually. This means that more than ever before, location is no drawback to us in the work we do globally and within Australia.
Over the previous six months, I have found many of my authors with a heightened enthusiasm and an increase of writing time. But I have realised that there are five key problems that prevent most authors' achieving their ideal outcomes. These are:
1. People begin to write without a plan;
2. Books are rushed through production without being edited or designed;
3. Authors are publishing books that are unprofessional and fail to reflect their business or brand;
4. Authors do not understand the power of leverage and how to market and promote their book;
5. Authors are failing to fit their books into their business ecosystem.
Simply put, fast isn't always best.
