Nicklas Lidstrom
Nicklas Lidstrom is a retired NHL defenseman who played 20 seasons, all with the Detroit Red Wings, from 1991-2012. Lidstrom was captain of the Red Wings for the final six years that he played and, in 2015, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Two years later he was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players ever. Lidstrom won four Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. In 2002, after winning his third Stanley Cup, he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's MVP.
Renowned for his defensive prowess, Lidstrom was named an All-Star 12 times and won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's premier defenseman seven times, which is tied with Hall of Famer Doug Harvey and trailing only Hall of Famer Bobby Orr who won the award eight times. The Red Wings never failed to make the playoffs during his time in the league and Lidstrom trails only Chris Chelios in total number of Stanley Cup playoff games. The Red Wings retired his jersey #5 in 2014.
Lidstrom was born and raised in Sweden. He played professionally for VIK Vasteras HK of the Swedish Hockey League for three years before being drafted in 1989 by Detroit. Internationally, Lidstrom won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, He also medaled at the 1991 (gold), 1994 (bronze) and 2004 (silver) World Championships.
