Al MacInnis spent 23 years playing in the National Hockey League as a defenseman for the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues. He was named an All-Star 12 times and was the 1989 winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy for his play in the Stanley Cup playoffs in helping the Flames to a title. He also won the Flames' Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award in 1994 and the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 1999 as the top defensive player in the NHL. The league named MacInnis to its list of "100 Greatest NHL Players" of all-time in 2017. He went into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.

MacInnis was raised in Port Hood, Nova Scotia and played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the Regina Pat Blues in 1979 before spending time with the Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers. In the 1981 draft, MacInnis was picked in the 1st round by Calgary. He made his NHL debut on December 31, 1981 though he didn't become a member of the Flames full-time until the 1983-1984 season. After retiring from playing in 2004, MacInnis moved to the front office and was named the Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Blues in 2006.
