As the author of The Better World Handbook and The Better World Shopping Guide, Ellis Jones has focused on bridging the gap between academics, activists and the average citizen. An expert on social responsibility, global citizenship, and activism, he has been interviewed for radio and television both in the U.S. and Canada and was featured in the documentary film 50 Ways To Save The Planet.
Jones' two best-selling books, each regularly updated, provide common-sense answers to the question "What can I do?" The Better World Handbook was named Best Book of the Year for Promoting Hope by Spirituality and Health magazine. The Better World Shopping Guide synthesizes 30 years of data gleaned from 75 nonprofit, government, and private sources that collectively track the social and environmental responsibility of 2000 companies. These companies are assigned grades from A to F based on their overall responsibility records. This decade-long research project has also resulted in an online searchable database and smartphone app, Better World Shopper, created for the general public.
Currently part of the sociology faculty at a small liberal arts college in New England, Professor Jones has taught for many years at the University of California at Davis, Sacramento City College, California Institute of Integral Studies, Goddard College, and Saybrook Graduate School. His academic work has taken him to England, France, Sweden, Thailand, Panama, and China, where he taught at China Agricultural University in Beijing. He is a winner of the Dakin Peace Award for scholarship in international peace and understanding.
Jones speaks on how to turn lofty ideals into practical actions, on the power of a new generation of consumers to change the world profoundly through everyday choices in what they buy, eat, and drive, what businesses and organizations they support, and how they use their energy and time as citizens, activists, and consumers.

Verified @emmawillard.orgDr. Jones, What an amazing experience for my students to meet you this evening during our seminar. You are an inspiration! I was so impressed with your expertise but even more impressed by your willingness to speak so comfortably and fluently from the perspective of power and privilege. We've been working all year on how to have conversations that cross boundaries of power, privilege, race, class, gender, etc. It was so important how you modeled being comfortable and educated in your speech about confronting and looking through the lens of your own privilege. Thank you! Would you be willing to speak with my group again?
