N. Davina Stewart is a cultural worker who holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago, a BA in African American Studies from Temple University, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Community Development and Urban Studies from Indiana University. She is a recipient of the prestigious Leeway Foundation Transformation Award that recognizes women and trans artists who create art for social change.
Davina had been writing, directing, and producing her solo and ensemble works for stage for over fifteen years. As a sexual violence advocate, she performed nationally for hundreds of college students as a cast member of A Long Walk Home Inc.'s Story of a Rape Survivor (2004-2010). She was the Assistant Director of Philadelphia, PA based Arden Theatre Company's award-winning productions of Tony Kushner's Caroline, or Change (2007) and Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder's Gee's Bend (2008).
Davina has an irreverent sense of humor. She utilizes satire, speculative fiction, and performance poetry to create compelling narratives and interactive public art projects that challenge the status quo and encourages participants to re-examine / re-imagine / re-invent the spaces they occupy.
As a workshop facilitator, Davina seeks to cultivate safe spaces for participants to candidly grapple with challenging issues. She strives to work within a human rights and social justice paradigm that acknowledges the inherent worth and creativity of all people- until someone inevitably proves her wrong.
