Stacia Kalinoski
Emmy Award-winning journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker who motivates audiences to turn a setback into a comeback by sharing her story of resilience—from job loss to brain surgery.
Stacia was a healthy college athlete when her first seizure struck. She left the University of Minnesota with her journalism degree and went on to report for TV stations in Nebraska, Oregon, and Michigan.
Seizures would eventually end her love of running marathons, and then, her journalism career. The worst day of her life led to the realization she needed to take control of her health. When Stacia’s doctor told her she qualified for surgery, an idea struck. She could educate people and help reduce the stigma of epilepsy by sharing her story and those of others in a documentary.
Stacia produced and edited "Brainstorm," which premiered on Twin Cities PBS, earned a regional Emmy nomination, and went on to air on PBS stations across the country. Her memoir, “Racing From Reality: My Uphill Battle Against Epilepsy,” is in the process of being published.
Turn a Setback into a Comeback
You can’t be resilient if you haven’t been through a storm, or the word wouldn’t exist. A seizure turned Stacia's life upside down, but she would later realize that low point would have an upside. It led to brain surgery and the PBS documentary "Brainstorm." Now she’s sharing her story of resiliency — how she battled epilepsy and got through the worst day of her life to eventually make the best decision of her life.
The audience will learn:
• The missing component to “Don’t give up."
• How to move past failure and disappointment
• How to turn a major setback into a comeback
