Peter Mandel
A frequent speaker throughout the U.S. and abroad, Peter Mandel writes for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Harper's, Reader's Digest, The Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Kids, and Huffington Post. His books have been featured in USA Today, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Museum of Natural History in New York, and have been translated into Japanese, German, Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Swedish and Danish.
A Lowell Thomas Award-winning travel journalist, Mandel often writes about unusual and extreme adventures, including experiencing a coup in Ecuador, trying to hike a suburban strip mall, camping in the African bush, suiting up as a theme park character, sailing aboard an Arctic icebreaker, and fishing for piranha on Brazil's Rio Negro. Originally from Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, Mandel lives in Providence these days with his wife, Kathy, and cats, Betty, Emily and Cecil.
New children's titles of Mandel's include Jackhammer Sam (Macmillan), called "wonderful and overwhelming, rattling and mesmerizing" by Publishers Weekly. "If a new Walt Whitman broke up sidewalks with a jackhammer, this is exactly what his 'Song of Myself' would be," says The Chicago Tribune.
Also new is Zoo Ah-Choooo (Holiday House), a PBS Reading Rainbow selection. "Lively pen-and-ink and watercolor cartoon illustrations join with the humorous text to tell the tale with panache," says School Library Journal. "Gusty splatters and loud, boisterous sneezes can't lose," says Kirkus Reviews. Published several years ago, Bun, Onion, Burger (Simon & Schuster) was named a Summer 2010 Children's 'Indie Next' pick by the American Booksellers Association.
Other books of Mandel's include Planes at the Airport (Scholastic), Boats on the River (Scholastic), Say Hey! A Song of Willie Mays (Hyperion), and Red Cat, White Cat (Henry Holt).
