A faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania's Organizational Dynamics program, Brian has designed and taught courses around effective communication practices in the workplace. He has authored two books, Exceptionally Human®: Successful Communication in a Distracted World and The Exceptionally Human® Airport Experience. Brian is the founder and president of Shapiro Communications, a professional development company that provides workplace communication workshops and training programs to organizations across multiple industries. These programs ensure an organization's communication practices produce the healthiest and most satisfying customer, employee, and client experiences possible.


As a seasoned performer who has written and performed in over a dozen original theatrical productions, Brian is also the vocalist/lyricist for the Paris-based musical trio, Grand Plateau. A dedicated Tai Chi and Yoga practitioner since 1993, he is somewhat multi-lingual, meaning he will make friends and won't starve in locations where Spanish and French are spoken. Brian attended a doctorate program in Performance Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, and holds a BA (San Diego State University) and MA (San Francisco State University) in Communication Studies. Born and raised in Los Angeles, with a 20-year period where San Francisco was home, Brian and his family now live in Philadelphia, PA.
