Jose is a combat Veteran of Iraqi Freedom 1 and 2, served 14 straight months in combat, was part of the initial invasion with orders to secure Bagdad and was honorably discharged in 2005. Upon his discharge, Jose was diagnosed with severe PTSD and was told he will forever be restricted in his abilities as he pursued life outside of the Army.

5.2 million adults will experience PTSD in a given year. People who suffer from PTSD are 9 times more likely to experience issues of drug and alcohol abuse and dependence, in addition to severe depression, anxiety, codependency, and often-suicidal thoughts. PTSD is not restricted to our brave men and woman serving our country, although 22 veterans lose their battle with PTSD to suicide every day.

Once diagnosed with PTSD, Jose had two choices. Succumb to the label of PTSD and become another statistic OR re-define his diagnosis as post-traumatic growth (as defined by Richard G. Tedeschi and Lawrence G. Calhoun, the University of North Carolina, Charlotte). Post-traumatic growth relates to ones ability to have a positive change experience as a result of the struggle with a major traumatic life event.

For Jose the struggle with a major traumatic life event was 14 months of experiencing death and destruction in which the resiliency of psychological, moral, ethical, spiritual, and emotional beliefs and feelings are burdened. Redefining his diagnosis as post-traumatic growth allows for one to deal with the difficulties often associated with PTSD which may include insomnia, moral injury, survivor guilt, relationship problems, distress in public, job difficulties and loss, questioning of leadership decisions, disclosure challenges, reactions to multiple triggers, feelings of isolation, shame and guilt just to name a few, in a positive way.

Post traumatic growth for Jose came in the from of a highly successful corporate career as one of the nations top insurance sales agents for 10 straight years, a growing family with his wife and two children, and his daily devotion to God and his faith.  As a combat veteran Jose applied his core values of duty to fulfill your obligations. ... Respect. ... Selfless Service. ... Honor. ... Integrity. ... and most of all Personal Courage to forge a new pathway that led to many accomplishments both personally and professionally.
