Finding the Light in Dark Days
These are tough times and finding the light means finding your purpose, your sense of humor and dealing with compassion fatigue. Both professional and family care providers need all the help they can get and Breeda Miller provides powerful, memorable stories that people remember long after the swag bags are stored away.
Breeda is a talented storyteller, writer and actor. She has written two books and a play which she is performing as a one-woman show. Captivating with actionable ideas framed in memorable stories. That's what Breeda does best. She is able to take ordinary experiences and turn them into extraordinary lessons that lift people up and give them hope.
Here's a bit from Breeda:
I Was An Accidental Caregiver
I was my mother's caregiver for many years - including hospice care in my home. I had no training, no experience. I didn't know what I didn't know. All I knew was that I loved my mother.
I wasn't prepared to deal with the exhaustion, frustration, and isolation I experienced as a family caregiver. I was shocked by the sense of isolation and loneliness I experienced. That's why I wrote The Caregiver Coffeebreak and I speak to groups to help Caregivers Carry On, using memorable stories to create impact.
Take a Break Before You Break and The Caregiver Coffeebreak, Breeda's books, have been named the 2021 and 2018 Friendly Caregiver Award in Books by Today's Caregiver Magazine. She speaks to health care professionals, hospice organizations and organizations that support family caregivers. In addition to her book, Breeda has a series of short videos that support Caregivers with inspiring stories, clever ideas and a sense of companionship called CareBoost. Her stories have been broadcast nationally on The Moth story hour on NPR.
Breeda Miller is a talented writer, skilled actor, voice-over professional and playwright. She speaks with authenticity because she cared for her frail mother for 6 years including hospice care in her home. As a member of the Sandwich Generation, Breeda managed to run a household, manage a business, raise three teenagers (two with special needs) while providing 'round the clock care for her ailing mother. Her life experiences and years of study have positioned her as an expert when it comes to caregiver support.
Her new play, Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home is a solo performance piece that presents her family's emigration to America story as well as her personal journeys including infertility, international adoption, caregiving, dementia, and hospice care. It's a show filled with laughs, tears, and lots of tea.
A graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy with a degree in Communication Studies and Business, Breeda began in Detroit working at a number of radio and television stations for over a decade. Her speaking career included a stint touring nationally in a one-woman comedy produced in Chicago. Breeda has recorded audio books, emceed major events, and used her resonant voice to impact people around the world.
Take a Break Before You Break – Strategies in Self Care - responds to a major crisis today. The number of people needing care is exploding and the number of people able and available to provide that care is dwindling. Stress and burnout of family caregivers impact all socio-economic groups. Family caregivers dealing with the stress of caregiving are impacted both in their professional lives as well as their family relationships. This interactive and dynamic session will inspire your audience to consider the value of self-care and the opportunity to commit to consistent and beneficial self-care practices.
