Inspiration and hope. If that is what you are looking for then look no further.

Dennis Maione keeps bumping up against cancer. First diagnosed with a colorectal tumour as a graduate student and young newly-wed, he thought his subsequent victory over the disease would set him up for a straight run at life. A decade later, however, he found out he carried a cancer gene. And a short while after that, fifteen years after his first diagnosis, the entrepreneur and father of three faced a recurrence of colon cancer, the second round exacting a higher toll than the first.

Centring around the lessons learned from his journey through cancer, Maione talks to audiences about crisis, struggle, and hope. While his illustrations come from his experience with cancer, his message is applicable to a wide variety of audiences. And, his conclusion that wholeness in life is to be sought after more than anything else will both challenge and inspire all those who hear his message.

Dennis is the 2014/2015 Reader in Residence of the Literacy Partners of Manitoba focussing on the theme of Literacy for and to facilitate Telling Your Own Story.

Dennis is a member of: The Manitoba Writer's Guild; The Manitoba Storytelling Guild; and Canada's Creative NonFiction Collective.

Dennis' most recent book, What I Learned from Cancer (2014 Prompters to Life) is available in softcover in bookstores and as an eBook through Amazon web sites.

The Power of Story

Stories have long been the core of the fabric of society. Since humans developed language, stories have been the primary mechnaism by which news and entertainment have been transmitted. This presentation speaks of the importance of knowing your own story and the importance of telling that story to others. For it is through our stories that our society is strengthened, our prejudices are removed, and our problems get solved.

The Power of Story: A Seminar in Four Parts

This is a seminar in four parts, however, the first session can function in a standalone capacity as an introduction to the craft and value of the personal narrative. The overall goal for the seminar is for each student to choose an event in his or her life and write about it in a memoir style. These pieces of writing would later be compiled and published for the class as an anthology of stories. The sessions are as follows:
