Sir John Armitt
He lead the team that was responsible for the construction of the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympics, including the Olympic Park, planning and funding transport for the Games and regulating advertising and street trading. Many people consider Sir John the real hero of the Olympic Games, as the ODA delivered the venues on time and under budget to LOCOG nine months before the start of the Olympics.
Sir John Armitt is Chairman of National Express, the leading transport provider delivering services in the UK, North America and Spain. Sir John is also Chairman of City and Guilds, Deputy Chairman of the Berkeley Group and a member of the Board of Transport for London. Since November 2012 Sir John has been a member of the Airports Commission, which is to present options to the government to maintain the UK's status as an international hub for aviation.
Sir John was previously Chief Executive of Network Rail from 2002 and Chief Executive of Railtrack plc from December 2001. He has extensive experience in the construction and transport sectors.
From 1986 to 1993 he was Chairman of the Laing International and Civil Engineering Divisions, a company he joined as a graduate in 1966. From 1993 to 1997 he was Chief Executive of Union Railways, the company responsible for development of the high speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link. In 1997 he was appointed as Chief Executive of Costain, a position he held until 2001.
He was formerly Chairman of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Sir John was awarded the CBE in 1996 for his contribution to the rail industry and received a knighthood in the New Year Honours List 2012 for services to engineering and construction.
