
Byron Bagby
Major General, U.S. Army (Retired)
VA, USGeneral Bagby retired from the United States Army in 2011 at the rank of Major General. Throughout his 33-year career, he held leadership positions up to the two-star level both overseas and in the United States.
Having served in five of the Army's ten divisions, he has held key command positions in the 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division. He has combat deployment experience in Grenada and Afghanistan. He served in the Pentagon on the Joint Staff in the Directorate of Strategic Plans and Policy (J5), and the Army Staff in the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs (G8). He has overseas experience in Afghanistan, Egypt, Germany, Korea, and the Netherlands.
Byron also served as the Deputy Commander of the 10th Mountain Division, a 12,000 soldier organization. As Chief of the Office of Military Cooperation - Egypt, leading a staff of almost 200, General Bagby managed the largest security cooperation program in the world, with programs valued at over $1.3 billion. As Commandant of Joint Forces Staff College, he led a faculty and staff of over 250 people in educating almost 2,500 students annually in nine different programs, one of which was accredited to confer a Masters degree.
General Bagby was Chief of Staff for U.S. Army, Europe, directing all of the activities of 1,200 people, including eight General Officers and Senior Executive Service Civilians, in 30 locations with an annual operating budget of $1.5 billion. He served as Operations Director for Joint Force Command - Brunssum (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), leading a staff of almost 200 people from 24 nations.
He has earned many military honors and decorations, including: two Army Distinguished Service Medals; four Defense Superior Service Medals; two Legions of Merit; a Bronze Star Medal; the Egyptian Order of Merit (Second Class); the Ranger Tab; and the Master Parachutist Badge.
He earned a Bachelors degree in Economics from Westminster College. Before serving on the Faculty/Staff at the United States Military Academy, Byron earned a Masters degree from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. In 2011, General Bagby was awarded the Westminster College Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award and he is a 2012 inductee into the Fulton High School Wall of Fame.
Byron is a member of many organizations, holding life memberships in the following: the ROCKS, Inc.; Veterans of Foreign Wars; University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Alumni Association; and Association of the United States Army.
He is Managing Partner of BMB Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm that specializes in professional speaking, executive leadership development and coaching, international business development, alternative analysis, and strategy development. Byron has earned the National Association of Corporate Directors Governance Fellow credential and has previously served on the Board of Managers of Army Emergency Relief. He currently is on two non-profit boards, including serving as a Trustee on the Westminster College Board of Trustees.
