Michael Bryant’s story has us questioning: What would I do in his situation? How would it change me, those around me, and those whose lives I’ve changed forever?
A Harvard Law School graduate and then the acclaimed – and youngest ever - Attorney General of Ontario, Bryant’s life and those around him, changed forever over the course of 28 Seconds one summer night, August 31, 2009.
A night that began with a dinner to celebrate his 12th wedding anniversary ended with an altercation, an accident, and the death of cyclist Darcy Sheppard amidst a swirl of controversy.
Bryant was charged with dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death. Ironically, he had helped write the legal text for the same charges sixteen years earlier. Though charges against him were dropped, nothing could undo what had happened to cyclist Darcy Sheppard, or to Michael Bryant.
While he can’t speak for Sheppard, Bryant does now speak publicly of his personal challenges and his own battle with some of the very demons shared by Darcy Sheppard. Bryant's is a humbling story that highlights – what if?- and addresses the things in life you can change, and those over which you have no control.
