Ken Pohl
I have been involved in agriculture all my life. In my peak farming years I seeded approximately 3500 acres and fed up to 2500 head of my own cattle plus custom feeding. Our feedlot has capacity for 6000 head and it was at capacity many times over the years. We did everything from reputation finishing, to back grounding for local customers, to processing and preparing many thousands of head for export to Korea.
I had a many as 10 employees which required experience and expertise in all the areas I have checked. I managed to survive the high interest rates of the 1980's but not without many sacrifices and disappointments. At one point in my farming career I had a $2,000,000.00 operating loan that would reach its maximum on occasion. I was lucky to be mechanically inclined and was able to do a lot of my own equipment maintenance and repairs. It is hard to explain the stress that comes with all of the above. It was hard to not make mistakes with all the stress and I made my share.
I am happy to say I am third generation on our farm and very proud to be here. I rent our cultivated acres out and work part time for my renter. I have a small cow/calf head of 18 cows to keep my farming interests active. At this point in my life I spend most days doing the things I have always wanted to do but never had time such as sawing up timber for a customer or the feedlot.
Another of my favorite past times is riding or driving our wonderful Percheron/quarter horse cross team with my wife Verna. We do everything from going for a nice relaxing evening ride on the farm, to cutter parades with our sleigh in the winter, to extreme riding in our beautiful Rocky Mountains, and just the last couple of years taking our camperized wagon into the same beautiful back country camping. Verna also has a very busy Harness and Tack shop appropriately called The Hitching Pohl. Needless to say we are both living a dream!
