VIC, AUSTRALIA
Walter Mikac's story touched the world. His wife and two young daughters were amongst 35 people shot dead at Australia's worst ever massacre, at Port Arthur, Tasmania in 1996.

Walter's courage and dignity in the face of unimaginable horror had a profound and far reaching

effect. It was a journey requiring immense strength and courage, played out under the glare of the

media spot-light.

His desire to create something positive from the devastation won him universal acclaim. In 2018

he was a finalist in the Human Rights Commission Medal , a NSW state finalist in the Australian of

the Year and was acknowledged with a Member of the Order of Australia for work involving gun

reforms and for work in helping children who have suffered from violence through numerous

school programs of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Along with PM John Howard, Walter was integral in having the National Firearms Agreement 1996

bought into law. In 1997 one of Australia's leading childrens charity , The Alannah and Madeline

Foundation was formed and has since helped over 2 million children . Its anti bullying

programs such as Buddy Bear and E-Smart are run all over Australia and in all public libraries.
