A native of Ottawa, Kristina started skating when she was 11 because she wanted to distinguish herself from her ski-crazed family.

Good news for Canada.

At the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Kristina carried a heavy load competing in five events, capturing a silver and a bronze medal to add to the Olympic silver medal in the women's 1500m and Team Pursuit event at the 2006 Torino Games.

A conscientious athlete and advocate, Kristina speaks passionately about much more than her sport and her Olympic accomplishments.

Her diverse range of topics includes teamwork, women in sport, the environment, and her work with Right To Play. She recently presented at the Moses Znaimer's ideaCity Conference on The Power and Purpose of Uncertainty and continues to deliver provocative and engaging talks across Canada.

Sincerely committed to environmental change, she was invited to attend the Climate Project Canada in Montreal and was part of a group that spent time with climate change activists Al Gore and David Suzuki and also received some unexpected praise and encouragement from Yoko Ono for her work in organizing and hosting a "Bed-In" for Sustainability with community leaders in Calgary.

In September 2011 Groves announced she was retiring after decorated career in speed skating. She achieved more than she ever dreamed of in her 23-year race against the clock. The numbers say it all: 55 major international medals in 252 career individual international races since 1999; three silver and one bronze Olympic medals; three gold, five silver and nine bronze world championship medals; and nine gold, seven silver and 18 bronze medals on the World Cup circuit.

In 2011, Kristina was honoured as the University of Calgary's Distinguished Alumni of the Decade for a decade of consistent athletic performance and her work in building green initiatives within Speed Skating Canada. Her thoughtful demeanor and humility resonate with corporate and youth audiences alike.
