Allison A. Sakara
MSN, CRNP
PA, USOne of the nation's foremost experts in the practice of disaster nursing and disaster healthcare, Allison A. Sakara was recognized in 2005 as a Distinguished Member of the year by the National Disaster Medical System. Allison has dedicated her life to serving those in need in their most desperate hour. In addition to direct disaster response roles, she has provided expertise on Disaster and Pandemic preparedness for hospital committees, businesses, and educational organizations. If there is a dirty job in nursing or healthcare that no one else wants, Allison has mastered it with grace and style.
Since the 1980's, Allison has combined nursing with EMS. She began her healthcare career working in group homes for mentally retarded adults during the day and as a police and fire dispatcher at night. From there, she worked her way from home health aide to LPN to RN to Nurse Practitioner. Her interest in ER and Disaster work grew over the years and, recognizing that there was more to learn in that field than traditional nursing had to offer, went back to school to become an EMT/Paramedic and Pre-Hospital Nurse. During Hurricane Ike, she qualified as a helicopter flight nurse in anticipation of the disaster response role on Galveston Island. Allison recently completed her second NP specialty and currently is pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Case Western Reserve University
Allison's clinical experience as a nurse and nurse practitioner has included work in pediatrics, hematology, oncology, critical care transport, and disaster response. Not satisfied with being at the mercy of "bean counters", Allison became an expert grant writer and research coordinator during her tenure at Yale University School of Medicine, helping to secure both program funding and investigational treatment options for children and adults living with hematologic disorders. In addition to positions with patient impact, she also has been a consultant to the biomedical and medical device industry for over a decade, where she gained a reputation for preparing FDA submissions and data analyses that successfully weathered review without need for revision or resubmission.
Upon joining High Alert as a part time consultant, Allison quickly distinguished herself as uniquely able to codify and fully implement the vision of High Alert's founder. As High Alert's Vice-President, she was instrumental in the transformation of High Alert from a national consulting firm into an international, multi-divisional corporation with operations in Critical Response, Consulting, Professional Speaking, Technologies, Publishing, Training, Simulation and Human Continuity. In January of 2010, Allison became on of the few women to ascend to the position of President and Partner of an international a consulting firm dedicated to raising the awareness, application and adoption of disaster preparedness, planning and education by individuals, families, businesses, healthcare and communities worldwide, High Alert International.
When not responding to disasters or running an international corporation, Allison continues to provide direct medical care as well as volunteering for several community-based behavioral health response organizations, including the local CISM team and Therapy Dog volunteer programs and in 2009 was the Technical Advisor for the Spike TV series Surviving Disaster.
