Humanitarian - WAR CHILD CANADA & USA and former Ontario Minister for Children and Youth Services

Dr. Eric Hoskins, co-founder of War Child Canada, is a medical doctor with more than 20 years of experience working in war zones. Deeply committed to human rights and social justice, he believes that each of us can make a difference, and has spent his professional career inspiring others to do just that.

One of the leading experts on human rights and humanitarian issues, Hoskins has worked at the highest level of government, and with the United Nations and non-governmental organizations in many of the world’s most violent flashpoints, including Iraq, Somalia, Darfur, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

His roles have included Minister of Children and Youth Services and as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. During his time as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, he led the Partnership Project, which redefined the relationship between government and the dynamic not-for-profit sector, and worked on behalf of our province’s many diverse communities. As Minister of Children and Youth Services, he took important steps to address the roots of violence and provide young people with opportunity through the Youth Action Plan. He also made improvements to our child and youth mental health system and to the supports we provide to our most vulnerable children.

Profiled by Time Magazine as one of Canada's five leading activists Hoskins is also the youngest recipient of the United Nations Lester B. Pearson Peace Medal and has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

From 1997 to 2000, Hoskins was the senior policy advisor to former Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy. He was involved with issues such as: ending use of child soldiers, banning landmines, the International Criminal Court, conflict diamonds, peacekeeping, and human rights.

War Child Canada helps children affected by conflict around the world. Hoskins, who graduated from McMaster University’s Medical School at age 23 and earned a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University, oversees all financial aspects of the organization, including special fundraising initiatives. His work is credited with bringing the issue of war-affected children to the forefront of the Canadian charitable agenda.

Dr. Eric Hoskins writes regularly on social and humanitarian issues and appears frequently on Canadian television and radio as an expert commentator. As a keynote speaker, he lives and breathes his humanitarian convictions. And everyone in the room is changed for the better.
