
Larry Downes
Larry Downes has been a leading voice in the development of business strategies that exploit disruptive technologies. His clients include leaders in the manufacturing, services, and high technology industries. With a background in business, technology, and law, he often works at the forefront of difficult issues of public policy and corporate behavior. He is also a noted expert on the problems of law and technology, and has taught courses on the subject to law students, engineers and business executives for several years at leading institutions.
Previously a consultant with leading firms including Accenture and McKinsey & Co., in the mid-1990’s Downes began to develop a new approach to executing “digital” business strategies, working with leading technologists like Nicholas Negroponte and Alan Kay. That work led to the publication of “Unleashing the Killer App: Digital Strategies for Market Dominance” (Harvard Business School Press, 1998), a radical manifesto and the first book to argue that the Internet’s impact would soon be felt in every industry and business interaction. “Killer App” has now sold over 200,000 copies, making it the best-selling book on business strategy and technology of all time.
Downes followed up “Killer App” in 2002 with “The Strategy Machine: Building Your Business One Idea at a Time” (HarperBusiness 2002), which was named by Barnes & Noble as the best book on business strategy for the year.
His new book, “The Laws of Disruption: Chaos and Control in Your Virtual Future” will be published in 2009 by Basic Books.
Downes writes regularly on issues of law and business for Harvard Business Review and, since 2004, has been a featured columnist for CIO Insight, where he writes “The Legal Jungle.” A former columnist for the groundbreaking new economy magazine The Industry Standard, Downes also writes frequently on technology law for the editorial page of USA Today.
From 2004-2007, he was Associate Dean and Adjunct Professor at The University of California—Berkeley’s School of Information, where he taught courses on information law and policy. He was also a Lecturer at the Haas School of Business and its Management of Technology program, and has taught at Northwestern University School of Law, The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and Harvard Law School.
In 2006, Downes was named a Fellow at the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society.Larry Downes received his B.A. with Honors from Northwestern University, and his J.D. with High Honors from the University of Chicago. From 1993-1994, he served as law clerk to the Hon. Richard A. Posner, Chief Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
