
Sam Tyler
Sam Tyler is a gifted speaker, who uses clips from his films to deliver memorable programs and messages to audiences as diverse as 50 lawyers on a firm retreat in Boston to 700 employees of an insurance company at their annual conference in South Africa.
Good to Great, a documentary based on Jim Collins’ best-selling book, is Tyler’s most recent work. Funded by Verizon, the program is a look at the principles of greatness in action at organizations as diverse as Southwest Airlines, The Dallas Police Department, Starbucks, and a Latino school in Yuma, Arizona. The program is airing nationwide on Public Television in 2007 and 2008.
In a career that spans 25 years, Tyler has created award-winning documentary films for Public Television on the three best-selling business books of the era. Tyler points to other works involving Lance Armstrong and Southwest Airlines as “some of the fascinating creative opportunities and challenges I’ve experienced.”
Tyler has been involved in creating and producing television programs since his pioneering documentary In Search of Excellence in 1985. His current production The News-Press Story, a documentary film pertaining to events involving The Santa Barbara News-Press, will be on Public Television in 2008. Prior to becoming an independent producer, Tyler was VP for Development at WGBH Boston, one of PBS’ flagship stations, where he was involved in funding programs such as Julia Child’s Kitchen, This Old House, NOVA, and Frontline.
Tyler is also responsible for 20 other video and film projects including the launch of numerous management development programs (The Harvard Business School Video Series) and other PBS films, including The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Excellence Files and The Entrepreneurial Revolution. He recently produced a profile of Lance Armstrong.
He has been active in non-profit organizations both in Boston and Santa Barbara, having served on numerous boards, several as Chair. He has completed 5 marathons, skis and snowboards, and is currently compiling several of his films into a historical retrospective for cable television.
Tyler is a graduate of Princeton University. He is married and has five children.
