Difficult People and Uncomfortable Conversations

Perhaps you have a coworker you really dislike, but now you must have a conversation with that person. Perhaps you’re about to have a discussion with someone whose values are significantly different from your own. Perhaps you must give feedback to a sometimes annoying and frequently underperforming employee. These are all examples of uncomfortable conversations and what makes them uncomfortable, is that they raise or are likely to raise the volume of EMOTIONAL NOISE experienced by the...

Putting the ROI Back Into DEI

This is a difficult time for diversity, equity, inclusion and belongingness. In the past year, there has been tremendous political and legislative backlash toward DEI programs, including 4 Executive Orders signed by President Trump in the first 48 hours of his second term. While this backlash may be politically motivated, that does not mean it’s completely wrong. There have been problematic elements in DEI programs for years, so it behooves us to take a closer look at the current state of...

Unconscious Bias: A Quiet Performance Killer

Noise is anything that interferes with the accurate transmission of a message between a sender and a receiver. It can be categorized as internal, external, emotional or cultural; however, unconscious bias is the loudest form of noise because it not only interferes with our ability to build powerful relationships across cultural differences, it leads to bad decisions that impair individual and organizational performance. This session will describe unconscious bias...

Reducing Unconscious Bias in Customer Service

A study titled, Beyond Starbucks: How Racism Shapes Customer Service, emailed 6,000 hotels across the U.S. using 12 fictitious email accounts. They varied the names of the senders to signal different attributes, such as race and gender, to the recipients at the hotels. They were brief emails that simply asked for local restaurant recommendations. The researchers tracked whether hotel employees responded and if so, analyzed the content from those emails. They found two significant...

Unconscious Bias and Uncomfortable Conversations

Unconscious bias is a quiet, yet powerful performance killer because it interferes with our ability to build relationships across differences and leads to bad decisions that impair individual and organizational performance. One way it negatively affects performance is through the manifestation of microaggressions. These commonplace statements send derogatory messages to certain individuals, often unintentionally, that can damage relationships and impair performance. This session defines...

A very unique ability is to captivate an audience and make them process your spoken words long after you have left the room. This, I am sure, occurs on many occasions when Dr. Tyrone A. Holmes speaks. It certainly happened when he spoke at the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development's Samuel H. Johnson Luncheon. He understood our mission and delivered a powerful and memorable keynote address that provided our guests with the "professional opportunity of a lifetime".

Thanks Tyrone! Building Powerful Business Relationships in a Culturally Diverse Society was a huge hit! Everyone really enjoyed the presentation and we all learned something new about L.U.C.A.S. and the S.O.L.E.R. Technique that we can use at work and home. I'm going to recommend you to Garland Preddy, Education Coordinator at the National SGMP Headquarters. SGMPAZ appreciates your time and knowledge shared at today's meeting. This is a topic that we all need to work on and you provided some excellent communication tools for us to implement. I will definitely be more aware of the "noise" concept. We had excellent attendance today too, 22 members and guests were there. I hope it generates some future business for you. Let's talk about having you back in the fall of 2017! Thanks for your continued support of SGMPAZ.

Thank you for facilitating this year's diversity presentation. The RAs could not stop saying exciting and thought provoking things about the information you covered. The evaluation showed high marks - RAs scoring each question at a 4 or higher. The things they liked most about the presentation were: The L.U.C.A.S approach, learning the listening skills, the group activities and the style in which you deliver a presentation. They felt engaged and part of the process. I hope the high marks and comments provide you with some insight as to what the evaluations showed. Again, thanks and I'll be sure to keep you in mind for future sessions.

I have been a pediatrician practicing in a group practice for nearly 30 years, but when I decided to develop a program marrying my medical expertise with my passion for multisports, I was lost. Serendipitously, I had the great fortune of meeting Tyrone at a USAT sponsored business coaching retreat, where he was one of the presenters. The rest is history. In less than one year, he has coached me to developing a concept into a reality! Tyrone is a visionary, who is able to structure, organize, prioritize and succinctly guide in a way that I find simply remarkable. I am amazed at his simplistic genius and continue to be grateful for his business coaching and his kind spirit. Health Powered By You, LLC, is another feather in Tyrone's cap that is already a full headdress!
