Dr. Bill Code
Biography: Dr. Bill Code February 2007
Dr Bill Code grew up on a farm in south east Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border. After completing his degree in medicine, he and his wife, Denise, a Registered Dietitian, practiced in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.
In 1983, Dr. Bill and his family moved to Calgary where he specialized in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. At this time, he also did two years of brain research. Having declined options in Stanford California and MD Anderson in Houston, Dr. Bill accepted a tenure track position at the University of Saskatchewan. There, his hectic schedule included brain and stroke research, directing the Anesthesiology Residency Program, teaching in the medical school and doing clinical anesthesia.
Plagued with recurrent migraine headaches and high cholesterol, Dr. Bill decided to leave his busy academic career at the University of Saskatchewan. He then took a clinical position in Duncan, BC, on Vancouver Island in 1992. His health improved, but he soon added a busy chronic pain practice. All this came to a halt when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996. By 1997, he and Denise had turned to Complementary Medicine choices for health recovery. He sought some quality of life from a very debilitated state of fatigue, cognitive challenges, declining mobility, muscle spasms and nerve pain problems.
His recovery journey is outlined in three books published in 2000, 2005 and 2007. Dr. Bill and Denise’s recent book “Winning the Pain Game” outlines a roadmap to reducing chronic pain through nutritional choices.
At present, Dr. Bill is one of 80 health Care Professionals in Dr. Andrew Weil’s Integrative medicine two-year Fellowship program at the University of Arizona. Dr. Bill’s goal is to become Canada’s version of Dr. Weil!
