Pierre Thuot (pronounced THOO-it) spent 10 years with NASA as one of its elite astronauts. Thuot speaks to audiences throughout the world on teamwork, education and his space flight experiences. Selected to become a Mission Specialist in 1985, he flew onboard three launches of the Space Shuttle (STS- 36, STS-49 and STS-62), from 1990 to 1994. During his second Space Shuttle mission, Thuot and two fellow Astronauts completed an 8 hour and 29 minute "space walk," upon which he held the U. S. National and Absolute world records for extravehicular (EVA or space walk) duration in space from 1992 until 2001. Upon his retirement from NASA in 1995, he logged nearly 18 hours during three "space walks," traveled more than 11 million miles and orbited the Earth 437 times. Thuot was born in1955 in Groton, Connecticut, the son of a career Naval Officer. He graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia in 1973 and graduated 30th in his class from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He received a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1985. Thuot received his Naval Flight Officer wings in August 1978. Following training in the F-14A Tomcat, at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, he was assigned to Fighter Squadron 14 where he made overseas deployments to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas aboard the USS John F. Kennedy and USS Independence. While assigned to Fighter Squadron 14 he graduated from TOPGUN, the Navy Fighter Weapons School. He was then selected to attend the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School located at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. Upon graduation in June 1983 he worked as a project test flight officer at the Naval Air Test Center flying the F-14A Tomcat, A-6E Intruder and the F-4J Phantom II. In June 1984 he returned to the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School as a flight instructor. He has over 3,500 flight hours in more than 50 different aircraft, and has over 270 carrier landings. Thuot is the recipient of eleven personal awards and 18 team achievement awards including three Defense Superior Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, the American Astronomical Society Flight Achievement and Victor A. Prather Awards for 1993 and the International Aeronautical Federation Sergi P. Korolyov Diploma for 1993, and the Air Force Association David C. Schilling Award for 1992. Upon retiring from NASA, Thuot became the Associate Chairman of the Aerospace Engineering Department at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Thuot retired from the Navy in August 1998 and served for 2 years as the Vice President of Administration and Special Programs with the Space Systems Group of Orbital Sciences Corporation, Dulles, Virginia. Thuot is currently the Executive Vice President & Chief Opertating Officer at Hawkeye Systems, LLC. Thuot currently resides in Centreville, Virginia with his wife, Cheryl and their two children. He is active in his son's Cub Scout Pack, assists with baseball coaching duties and is an active general aviation instrument rated private pilot.
