Dr Dana Cowles was born in Boise, ID, the son of a dairy farmer. He was raised around the greater New York City area. He was educated at St. John's University with a dual degree in Biology and Philosophy, and then obtained his Osteopathic Medicine degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
His childhood was full of experience and exploration, but also significant fears. Those fears were amplified by a violent car accident at 14 years old. That quickly changed a feeling of fear to helplessness. He then spent the majority of his adolescent and young adult life pursuing a goal of fearlessness. He spent his free time on a wrestling team, and then started chasing jobs that would be fun or exciting.
During college, he gained an EMT license and worked around the Jamaica, Queens area. Shortly after he started, his partner was murdered at home, alone, and reinstituted those feelings of helplessness. He progressed as an Emergency Medicine physician, obtained a private pilot's license, and a severe adrenaline addiction, all trying to chase down that fearlessness.
With the philosophy background, and the experience of that Emergency Medicine career, he learned the value of fear, pain, and anxiety, as well as how to channel and use them. He also learned that a lot of goals in society have been pushed in the wrong direction.

Verificado @flaglercounty.govDr. Dana Cowles visited the Flagler County Senior recently. He began his presentation with an interesting question about life... their life purpose, which lead them to thinking about their own lives. He then proceeded to give lots of facts about Philosophy and History, such as the root of depression and the origin of most of our medications. He was able to keep their attention and answered lots of questions about their current conditions,. The seniors walked away with a renewed sense of purpose.

Verificado @seaspcfl.orgDr. Cowles' talk on the pursuit of happiness in society was interesting, educational, and spiritual. Happiness is not a goal in life we should seek; security and affirmation are really the pursuits. Although this was said to be "an opinion", there is evidence that love and relatedness, forgiveness, and meaning and purpose have been identified as the "Spiritual Needs" of patients (Spiritual Care the Nurse's Role, by Shelly & Fish 3rd Ed 1998). It was a delight hearing this from a physician, thank you!

Verificado @yahoo.comDr. Dana Cowles spoke at our Nurse Luncheon/ where the subject was "Humor in Medicine" which was perfect for the event and audience. The setting was in a loud restaurant but Dana handled the distraction with great vocal projection and I personally could hear him just fine from the back of the room. He had a great sense of timing with humor which gave the audience time to respond to the joke and also has a talent for spontaneous comebacks. He is a lot of fun to listen to and I would highly recommend him for any occasion or event.
