Kevin Freedman

Kevin Freedman

MB, CANADA

A renowned nonprofit expert and storyteller, Kevin has substantial and varied experience in governance and has unique and captivating ways to help make boards and executive leaders more effective.

Kevin has been a volunteer since he was six years old and has moved through many volunteer roles before finding his love for board governance in his early 20s. After sitting on more than a dozen boards and leading multiple nonprofit organizations, he began passing on his knowledge to organizations in his network on a pro bono basis for a few years before launching his consulting business, The Governance Guru. He has started initiatives such as an ad-hoc aid organization after living through the devastating 2006 Jogjakarta, Indonesia earthquake, an international water stewardship project where he and others challenged themselves to live on less than 25 litres of water per day for the month of March, and a community engagement initiative that brought together an impressively diverse group of leaders to discuss how to bridge divides and engage citizens.

For more than 20 years Kevin has been speaking to groups on topics close to his heart, including blood donation, human rights, voluntarism, and environmental issues including through his water stewardship initiative. In all, he has presented to more than 15,000 students mostly in single classroom settings, and always as a volunteer. He first began speaking as a professional through his role as a prolific instructor with multiple business faculties, and later as a trainer for nonprofit boards and executives.

Kevin has amazing tales of adversity and intrigue that have garnered international media attention, including his experience as an accidental car thief, his unusual travel stories, and his odd and almost farcical romantic experiences, especially his long time long distance relationship with his wife.

For his service Kevin has been awarded recognition from the Mayor of Winnipeg, YMCA Canada, Golden Key International Society, and the Governor General of Canada, among others.
