Traci Ruiz, M.Ed., is a nationally recognized High Stakes Leadership Expert, International Keynote Speaker, and Crisis Strategist. With over 25 years in public safety, she retired as one of the highest-ranking Latina police officers in the United States, earning a reputation for making decisive calls in environments where hesitation carried real consequences.
Raised in a household shaped by the sacrifices of her grandparents, who migrated from Mexico in search of opportunity, Traci learned the values of resilience, responsibility, and service at an early age. Those lessons ultimately led her to law enforcement, where she chose a career defined by complexity, risk, and accountability.
As a rookie cop, Traci worked undercover in high-risk narcotics operations, posing as a prostitute while buying drugs from armed and highly suspicious dealers. In one operation, when a suspect claimed he recognized her, Traci had seconds to assess the threat, remain composed, and make a decision that would determine both her safety and the success of the mission. That moment, and many like it, shaped her understanding of what High Stakes Leadership truly requires: clarity under pressure, disciplined thinking, and decisive action.
Over the course of her career, Traci became known for her ability to train and lead others in the most demanding environments. For nearly two decades, she was the only Latina officer in Michigan entrusted with training officers, recruits, and community members in de-escalation, close-quarters combat, and survival tactics. Her work ensured those on the front lines were prepared to act with confidence and control when lives were on the line.
As a detective and police leader, Traci co-founded Ingham County’s first Elder Death Review Team, uncovering elder homicides often overlooked due to age bias. She later co-authored a statewide Adult Abuse Guideline, served as a court-certified Elder Abuse Expert, assisted with national cases, and was appointed as the first and only police officer to Michigan’s Governor’s Board of Medicine, contributing to physician oversight, safety, and public trust initiatives.
Throughout her career, Traci demonstrated unwavering integrity. When asked by higher-ranking officials to participate in practices that conflicted with her ethical standards, she chose accountability over assimilation, a decision that ultimately required her to leave a position she had earned. That experience reinforced her belief that leadership is defined by the willingness to act decisively and ethically when the stakes are high.
Today, Traci equips leaders through High Stakes Leadership keynotes, executive programs, and strategic advising, using her proprietary DECIDE Model to guide decision-making during crisis, challenge, or change. Her work strengthens confidence, speed, trust, and influence, giving leaders a clear structure to act when pressure is high and time is limited. Her presentations are practical, direct, and grounded in real-world experience, delivering tools leaders can apply immediately.
An award-winning speaker and trusted advisor, Traci is recognized for her ability to connect with audiences through authentic storytelling and precise, actionable insight. As one audience member noted, “Traci’s genuine storytelling, honesty, and engaging style create an atmosphere of trust and openness. She has an exceptional ability to connect with her audience, making each person feel heard and seen.”
Beyond her professional work, Traci serves on the boards of No Senior Without Christmas and the
Black National Speakers Association (BlackNSA). In 2024, she was honored by BlackNSA with both Chapter Leader of the Year and the Greg Smith Strength Award, recognizing her leadership, service, and impact.
