Rev. Dr. Earl J. Griffin, Sr. was born September 24, 1955, in Greenville, North Carolina. He is the eighth child of thirteen born to William Earl and Nettie Mae Griffin of Grifton, North Carolina. He graduated from Ayden-Grifton High School, on June 7, 1973, and began a twenty-year military career with the United States Army. He served in Europe, South America, Asia, and several states in America; Dr. Griffin retired on October 1, 1993.
Dr. Griffin began preaching in 1979, in a small European town called Mons, Belgium. He has served as a pastor in the Christian Methodist Episcopal since 1992 and presently serves as Pastor, at Lewis Temple CME Church, Grambling, Louisiana. He also served as Presiding Elder, at the Monroe District, Louisiana Region Annual Conference (2014-2022) and President of the Connectional Presiding Elder’s Council, CME Church (2018-2022).
Dr. Griffin obtained undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland; the Master, Divinity Degree from Erskine Theological Seminary, Due West, South Carolina; a Master of Science in Leadership with Walden University; and an Honorary Doctorate in Divinity from St. Thomas Christian University, Jacksonville, FL. He serves as an Adjunct Professor of World Religions, at the University of Phoenix and a Certified Trainer, Speaker and Coach with the John Maxwell Group, a leadership development consortium.
Dr. Griffin is a community activist. He assisted the Webster Parish community in ensuring the J. L. Jones Elementary School remained open during the Webster Parish School Board restructuring process. As such he was appointed to the School Improvement Committee from 2010-2012 and received the 2010-2011 Minden District, LA Region Service Award. He and his wife also participated in the 2011 Fuller Legacy Build that helped build eight new homes in the Minden area.
Dr. Griffin served as guest speaker for the 2015 Freedom Fund Banquet, Minden Branch NAACP; Commencement Speaker, 2015 International Denomination Theological Center, Certificate of Theology Program, Grambling, LA; opened the 2011 Session of the Louisiana State House in Prayer as a guest of Senator Robert Adley; Speaker for the 2011 Black History Program, Minden Branch Social Security Office; Commencement Speaker, 2013 Summer Graduation Ceremony, Shreveport Job Corps Center; and Facilitator, Executive Public Speaking course, Southern University Shreveport Branch. In 2018, Dr. Griffin was a breakout trainer at the United Real Estate Leadership Awards and Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, training real estate agents on how to be more intentional in their success strategies.
Dr. Griffin is also a member of both the Shreveport-Bossier and Grambling African-American Chambers of Commerce and the Southeast Georgia Minority Chamber of Commerce, Columbus, GA.; and an active member of the Minden Branch NAACP. He received both the 2011 Citizen of the Year Award from the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the 2014 Making a Difference Award from the Shreveport-Bossier-DeSoto Parish African-American Association.
Dr. Griffin is married to Marilyn McDowell Griffin, a retired educator of 31 years.
