Explaining the need and outlook for the energy transition, from oil and gas to sustainable energy.

Dwayne Purvis, P.E. builds on nearly three decades in the oil and gas industry as an engineer, educator, entrepreneur and executive -- plus a masters degree in sustainable energy --  to explain the science, the trends, and the business of the energy transition.  His deep research and authentic style makes complex and charged ideas accessible for both the oil and gas industry and  a general audience.

Dwayne has led or participated in hundreds of engineering studies over dozens of basins in the United States and abroad, and he has participated in the sale or acquisition of projects valued from tens of thousands to billions of dollars. His work on field studies and cash flows has often served as expert evidence in venues ranging from regulatory hearings to federal court and international arbitrations. Mr. Purvis has taught hundreds of industry professionals through courses, and he serves as an adjunct professor and former advisory board member at Texas Christian University. He also recently earned his own masters degree in sustainable energy from Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Purvis frequently speaks and writes on issues of shale reservoirs, the energy transition, commodity prices, decline curve analysis, risk analysis, and other industry matters. He has made over 100 presentations to professional societies, his writing has been featured at OilPrice.com and the Journal of Petroleum Technology, and he sometimes appears in media outlets like KQED and Houston Chronicle. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas, member of SPEE, AAPG, SEG, SIPES and an active, 25-year member of SPE.

Dimensions of the Energy Trilemma

The public discussion of energy policy has finally moved from a dilemma -- reliability/security and affordability -- to a "trilemma" by adding cleanliness.  Though expanded, the paradigm remains a simplification by ignoring the how of the transition and the linkage to issues like food, water and housing security.  This 40-50 discussion looks more deeply into each node of the trilemma and their linkage with other top priority...

Oil and Gas: Villain, Victim, or Hero?

High-level discussion of the world changing around the oil industry and how the oil industry best can respond.  (Hint: the answer is none of the above)

Public perception has roiled the oil industry in the last few years.  It is easy to feel attacked or even vilified just for trying to provide a still-essential product to a needy world.  Some evidence supports all three characterizations, and some facts don't.  More importantly, adopting any one...

Notwithstanding a full career in oil and gas, I now fully support a prompt energy transition.  It took me a great deal of thought to change direction, and I'm happy to talk about my path or anything I've learned along the way about both old and new energy.
