William Belle Jr. & Tiffany Denmark Belle
The choice between right and wrong is not really a choice. You choose what you think is right at the time. The real choice is between two options that seems equally right... Or equally wrong.
If you are in a marriage or relationship, have close friends or family members that may get ill or injured, or work in a stressful environment, you will at some point in your life face a life changing dilemma. The question is: Are you ready to make the right decision, when that decision seems impossible to make?
The hardest choices in life come unannounced. They have a very personal story to attest to that...
From Professional Soldier to Disabled Army Veteran
Bill was stationed in Iraq, the oldest soldier among his troops since he joined the military later in life, then his reserve unit was activated at wartime. This was around the time when the war was most intense. Both IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and close range combat took many American soldiers during that period. So you can imagine the stress of the families back at home...
But for the soldiers in Iraq, there was not just the enemy fire and bombs to worry about. Carrying heavy equipment through a barren sand pit in 130 degrees heat is no fun at all... The dust and sand will get everywhere; into your clothes, eyes, food, water, and rifle...
Imagine the relief of his family, when he came home for a 30 day leave in 2006. His wife was there to pick him up at the Army base. When his leave was over all they had to do was get in the car and drive back to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. But...While they were enroute, their car was hit by 4 trucks. His wife was killed on impact and Bill was in a Coma several months...
The doctors advised the family to "pull the plug," not expecting that he would wake up. And even if he did, he had suffered permanent brain damage and they said he would be in a vegetative state confined to the bed for the rest of his life.
However, against all odds, Bill not only woke up, but has miraculously made great progress. He now works a full-time modified job, walks & drives with assistance and owns a home, despite being a Disabled Army Veteran with Permanent Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Memory loss, overcoming Survivor Guilt and having All Finances stolen by his family that rightfully belonged to him and his young son. He didn't become a statistic. He didn't lose hope and become another homeless veteran.
Old memories...
The brain damage that Bill had suffered after the accident caused severe memory loss. As part of his recovery, he would look through old photo albums to see if he could regain some of his memories. He saw a 30 year old photo and couldn't remember the woman in that photo, but felt in his heart she was someone that he had been in love with. He kept the photo in his wallet for several months, as if it was a charm that would bring her back to him...
Some time after that, chance brought them together at a party. The woman in the picture was Tiffany — and today they are married.
The Ultimate Dilemma of a Trained Medical Professional: As a Nurse, Tiffany knows the medical implication of suffering brain damage and being kept alive by life support systems — All the facts and the theory. But reuniting with Bill caused her to evaluate her view on the issue.
And, since Bill has already been in that situation, if it comes to that, he CAN'T honor Tiffany's Legal Advance Directives for her last wishes and "pull the plug."
That has led great Personal Development in search for answers on Ethics, gaining real life experience and putting into action Developing Resilience, Financial Recovery, Stress Management and Determination & Encouragement.
